Asset Accounting
Asset master data, depreciation configuration, acquisitions, transfers, and retirements — all Asset Accounting topics tested in C_TS4FI_2023.
Key Concepts
Chart of Depreciation
Country-specific depreciation rules. Assigned to company code. Contains depreciation areas. SAP delivers standard charts (e.g., 1DE for Germany).
Depreciation Area
Represents a valuation method (book, tax, IFRS...). Area 01 = book depreciation (always posts to GL). Other areas can post in real time, periodically, or not at all.
Asset Class
Groups assets with similar attributes. Controls which G/L accounts are used (via account determination) and which depreciation keys are defaulted.
Depreciation Key
Defines the calculation method: declining balance, straight-line, units of production, etc. Assigned per depreciation area on asset master.
Account Determination
Maps asset class to GL accounts (asset balance sheet account, accumulated depreciation, depreciation expense). One account determination per asset class per chart of depreciation.
Useful Life
Period over which asset is depreciated. Defined in years + periods on asset master. Used by straight-line and other time-based methods.
Transaction Codes (T-Codes)
| T-Code | Description |
|---|---|
| AS01 / AS02 / AS03 | Create / change / display asset master |
| AFAB | Depreciation run (post periodic depreciation) |
| AB01 | Post asset acquisition (to vendor) |
| ABUMN | Asset transfer within company code |
| ABAVN / ABAON | Asset retirement (scrapping / with revenue) |
| AO90 | Configure account determination |
| AJRW | Asset fiscal year change (prerequisite before AFAB in new year) |
Key Rules to Remember
Chart of depreciation → depreciation areas → depreciation keys
Asset class → account determination → GL accounts
Legacy asset transfer: use AS91 (create legacy asset) + ABLDT (post legacy data) for data migration
Low-value assets (LVA): written off immediately in year of acquisition using a special depreciation key
Config Paths (SPRO)
SPRO → Financial Accounting → Asset Accounting → Organizational Structures → Chart of Depreciation / Depreciation Areas
SPRO → Financial Accounting → Asset Accounting → Valuation → Depreciation Keys
SPRO → Financial Accounting → Asset Accounting → Integration with GL → Assign GL Accounts
Exam Traps — Common Mistakes
AJRW (asset fiscal year change) must be run before AFAB in the new fiscal year — running depreciation without it will cause an error.
Depreciation area 01 always posts to GL in real time. Area 15 (tax) typically does not post — it is for reporting only.
When retiring an asset with revenue, the system automatically calculates gain/loss based on NBV (net book value) vs proceeds.
Asset sub-numbers: an asset can have multiple sub-numbers (components). Each sub-number has its own depreciation and master data.
